Monthly
Maricopa Butterfield House Concert Series   Maricopa, Arizona

From Nancy Ruybal:

Going into our 5th season starting September, 2010, we are looking to build the audience even further by bringing in some altogether new performers to our series, even stepping out a little further into the acoustic world.

For those of you who have not been to the new location, it seems folks are really enjoying it. Some arrive early to take photos and a bit of a walk before the shows. There is a barn being built and we hope to have it performance ready by September. The bay under the house is very nice, but, the barn will lend a special ambiance that only a barn can.

Please call ahead to let us know you are coming, especially if you have never attended one of our events before. We want to make sure we have plenty of seats and the right amount of coffee brewing! You might discover there is a trail ride or BBQ associated with the concert!

Here is the line up so far for the 2010-2011 Maricopa Butterfield House Concert series.

2nd Annual Texas Crossroads Cowboy Gathering  Van Horn, Texas

From Bob Kinford:

The 2nd annual Texas Crossroads Cowboy Gathering & Talent Show now has over half the forty-four entertainer slots filled with twenty-five acts signed up. The Crossroads Gathering is a one-of-a-kind event designed to promote cowboy poets, musicians, storytellers and comics in a way that helps them break into the cowboy poetry circuit. To do this the gathering has enlisted several participating events to judge the
performers and then invite selected performers to their events.

Charles Williams is representing the prestigious Campfire Tales held in conjunction with the Fort Worth Stock Show.

Updated 12/30:

Cade Schalla is sending a rep from his Cat Springs, Texas gathering, and Pete Kennedy will be making  selections for the 2011 Tyrone, New Mexico. A BIG thanks to both!

We are always looking for more gatherings to take part, so if you know of any that would be interested in making a selection out of Crossroads, let them know about it.

The Crossroads Gathering is MC’d by Ralph Hampton and Tamara Boatright of Ralph’s Back Porch (which just won the WMA’s radio station of the year award.) All performances are live-streamed to the internet in both video and audio formats making Crossroads the “Gathering heard around the world.”

A few of the entertainers participating in the 2010 event include
Buck Helton, Paul Harris, Phil “Tumbleweed” Crawford, and Cade Schalla all returning from last year. Hank Cramer will be there, coming all the way down from the great State of Washington, and Evelyn Roper coming down from Colorado.

The 2010 gathering will also feature a trappings trade on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Rather than a pricey collection of cowboy gear you’d be afraid to put on your horse, the gear here is being traded by west Texas cowboys for the working cowboy.

Updated 12/30:

We've had some requests for dinner show tickets. There is a  link for full price tickets but I have just added a page for entertainers only to get half price tickets. for the dinner show. This offer is extended to your family as well so be sure to let me know how many half price tickets you want.

We will be having jam sessions at the El Capitan after the ticketed shows on both Friday and Saturday.
We are starting to organize the Cowboy Church, and are needing someone to give the sermon...any volunteers?

We are currently sitting at 27 acts, so if you know any poets, musicians or storytellers that may be interested, let them know we have a few more openings.

We have also started a fan page on Facebook. If you were here last year, please leave a review or post a picture.

For more information to participate in this event, and on ticketed shows, visit

Moab's Western Stars  Moab, Utah

From Jo Lynne Kirkwood:

The 2010 Moab Western Stars Cowboy Poetry Gathering is fast approaching, and many poets and musicians will be part of the show, either as invited performers or as guest spots on the take-your-turn stage. We’d love to have everyone show up! Here are a few highlights of the 2010 gathering:

FRIDAY
Everything gets started at 12:00 at the MARC, with stages upstairs and downstairs showcasing musicians and poets in the western genre. You’ll hear both humorous and heartbreaking cowboy tales, and listen to both classic cowboy tunes and songs destined to become classics, sung by both traditional and new cowboy artists. FRIDAY EVENING features a COWBOY CAMPFIRE CONCERT at the MARC, with a round-robin of performers gathered around a campfire to entertain you.

There will also be western vendors at the MARC, offering merchandise to enhance your cowboy experience. Plan to spend the afternoon, and expect to have a wonderful time.

SATURDAY begins at 10:00 AM, with shows at the MARC. The stages run continuously all day, with fine entertainment and fun. Other events on Saturday include a trail ride from Red Cliffs Lodge, a Saturday Matinee Concert at STAR HALL,
SUZY BOGGUSS at Red Cliffs Lodge on Saturday Night, and a second CAMPFIRE CONCERT Saturday night at the MARC.

The Evening Ends with a COMMUNITY COWBOY DANCE at the MARC, scheduled for 9:00 PM. Come and dance to the great sound of the Sawmill River Band, and be sure to bring all your friends and family.

SUNDAY welcomes a COWBOY CHURCH session at 10:00 AM, at the MARC. This is a non-denominational Christian service under the direction of CPU Chaplain Marion Manwill, and we welcome anyone who would like to participate. Bring a song, poem, or thought to share – or just come partake of the spirit of the service.

Lunch with SUZY BOGGUSS following church requires advance ticket purchase, and seating is limited. Get your tickets now to assure you’ll be able to attend.

Performances at the MARC continue throughout the day, both upstairs and downstairs. Some real highlight of the gathering will be lectures and presentations by Susan and Mark with the TAPADERO series of western films, and a look into the history of the area – and the outlaws of the area! with Joel Frandsen. All this goes on in the lecture room downstairs, and will continue all three days – Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Sunday night winds things up with a concert at STAR HALL, featuring
DAVE STAMEY. Again, seating is limited so be sure to get your tickets soon! The website is www.moabwesternstars.com  - And Sunday IS Valentine’s day, so bring your sweetie!

SEE YOU IN MOAB!

Add an exhibit and reception on prairie skyscrapers.

The result is a live stage show representing musical and cultural icons for the upcoming performance of the Heritage of the American West.

Set for Thursday, February 18th, "Prairie Idol: songs of the plains" features the dynamic instrumentation and vocals of Boyd Bristow and Kenny Putnam, both who have played national and regional venues. The 90 minute
performance is also broadcast on radio.

Doors open at 6:00 PM with an exhibit on historic barns and information from the popular Smithsonian Institute Barn Again Museum on Main Street Tour. The program was retired from service in 2006. But its selection in
2000 of the High Plains Western Heritage Center as one of only two locations in the state to be included in the Tour, insured the Center would retain materials and information that are as relevant today as they were during the Tour's eight year run.

Adding more localized flavor, Leo Orme of Spearfish will share select images from more than 2,000 barn photographs and history representing structures in Lawrence County that had been collected as part of the
original Barn Again display at the Center.

Show time is 7:00 PM with a great pairing of two musicians and entertainers, Boyd Bristow and Kenny Putnam. Red hot instrumentals and beautifully sung ballads is what the audience can expect to hear. Bristow' s most recent CD release, Cloudless Sky is a celebratory collection of folk, country, R&B, gospel and rock and roll. Putnam comes with his latest work Sure Beat Me, a collection laced with soul and swing. Kenny's string playing is well known. He toured and recorded with The Roy Clark Show for several years, appearing on The Grand Ol' Opry, The
Tonight Show and HeeHaw regularly. Putnam has also been invited to the Smithsonian Institute to participate in The Festival of American Folklife, demonstrating violin-making and playing. He is a two-time South Dakota fiddle champ.

Ticket prices are $7 for seniors/kids and $12 for adults and are available at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, Spearfish. Call 605-642-9378 for tickets

In 2006, Steagall was named Poet Laureate for the state of Texas making him the first "cowboy" poet laureate for the state.

Throughout the day Saturday, there will be a variety of events for the entire family. As part of the Southeastern Chuck Wagon Cook-Off, teams of cooks will prepare beans, meat, potatoes, bread and desserts just as they
did during the cattle drives of the 1800s. Those interested may purchase tickets in advance for $12 to sample the menu items. Other activities include a fiddle, mandolin, guitar and banjo contest, adult Cowboy Poetry workshop, continuous family entertainment, and children's activities throughout the Museum.

The weekend wraps-up Sunday, March 14, beginning with Cowboy Church in the Booth Ballroom at 11:00 a.m. This is a non-denominational church service that will feature cowboy prayers and Western spiritual music. After the service, from Noon to 4:00 p.m., a Dutch Oven Cooking Contest will take place on the Museum's festival grounds. Top cooks will compete for prizes and bragging rights in three categories: bread, main dish and dessert, and will serve samples to the public. Also during this time the Georgia Youth Cowboy Poetry Contest Finals will be held in the Booth Theatre. The top 10 Georgia Youth Cowboy Poetry Contest finalists in four age divisions, representing grades five through twelve, will compete for cash prizes which are awarded for first, second and third place. Children's activities will also be offered throughout the Museum.

The Southeastern Cowboy Gathering is designed to celebrate our rich Western heritage and is a unique opportunity for residents of the Southeast to explore the West without leaving the South.

"With the new expansion complete here at the Booth Museum, visitors can enjoy even more Western paintings and sculptures than before," said Booth Museum Executive Director Seth Hopkins. "Not only do we want visitors to
experience America's Story through art, but we also want them to understand the life, work, and play of the American Cowboy by exposing them to cowboy poetry and music. Those attending the events scheduled will hopefully walk away with a greater appreciation of the Western experience. Whether it is a Dutch Oven Cooking Contest or a performance by a cowboy poet, we hope people will learn something new at the Cowboy Gathering."

Heritage of the American West Performance Series  Spearfish, South Dakota

From Francie Ganje:

Cowboy Irish Comes To The Heritage Stage

From the Celtic influence in buckaroo tunes to the Gaelic immigrants whose presence can still be felt in abandoned ghost towns in the Black Hills, the Irish/Scottish sounds and superstitions will all be a part of the Heritage of the American West presentation of “The Cowgirl and The Celt.”

The show is set for Thursday, March 18, 2010 at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, Spearfish, South Dakota. Pre-show activities begin at 5 PM and will take place in the Mining Exhibit Area where the story of gold, silver and coal exploration and immigrant expansion converge to tell part of the story of the settling of this region of the West.

A new book, titled Nuggets To Neutrinos: The Homestake Story will premiere with author Steven T. Mitchell on hand to discuss and autograph. In addition, a visual tour of ghost towns of the Black Hills will greet show goers.

“The Irish and Scots certainly have a big part in the evolution of cowboy music and in settling up the Black Hills,” says Heritage show producer, Francie Ganje. “For example, there is an interesting and entertaining story to be heard about the Molly / Conner Hog Fight that occurred in the now abandoned town of Galena in 1879.”

Add the traditional and original lyrics and melodies of The Prickly Pair & Cactus Chorale of Dubois, Wyoming, and you’d be hard pressed to add any more color to this performance….green or otherwise. Winners of multiple industry awards and nominated for six Western Music Association awards in 2009, Les and Locke Hamilton and bass player Norman Winter make up The Prickly Pair & Cactus Chorale. With a masterful handling of instruments and melodies, the trio lives up to the cowboy measure in music; big, original sounds, sounds that also appeal to folk fans by incorporating and melding Western, Swing, Bluegrass, Celtic and Gospel.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $7 for seniors and kids and are available by calling the Heritage Center at 605-642-9378 and at the door.

Fifth Annual Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West  Wickenburg, Arizona

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Arizona, presents the fifth annual Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West exhibition and sale, March 26-May 2, 2010.

From the museum's media release,

“We are very proud of the fact that Cowgirl Up! Art from the Other Half of the West, in just four years, has become one of the most important show and sale for women artists in the country,” says Mary Ann Igna, interim director of the Museum. “With 56 artists in this year’s show, you would have to travel to at least three other states and to all the other major art towns in the West to see the breadth and depth of what we will have here at one time…and in one place.” ....

With more than 200 drawings, paintings and sculptures in this year’s show,
Cowgirl Up! offers a much broader landscape of works than are usually found at a Western art show. “This is what makes Cowgirl Up! so unique,” says Igna. “We have artists stretching beyond traditional Western art to embrace the West’s unique lifestyle and spirit. Of course, we also have our share of horses and steers, but even those are unusually dramatic.”

From the 2008 event description:

Library Director Carolyn Blackwelder writes that she is always glad for an opportunity to clarify the origins of her city's name, and shared some information from Lost Trails of the Cimarron by Harry E. Chrisman.

"The Legend of Hooker Threlkeld"

John “Hooker” Threlkeld was so nick-named after General “Fighting Joe” Hooker of Civil War fame, some say. Others say he received his name after an old cattleman on the Beaver River whose name was Hooker. Still others say he received his name by being such a “Hooker—of cattle”—that is, a top roper. Wherever he received that nickname, we know how the town of Hooker, got it’s name for it was named after John “Hooker” Threlkeld. Hooker was born in Kentucky, November 134, 1846. He came west with his parents to Missouri. On May 15, 1864, he joined up with a freight outfit and bullwhacked west from Omaha to Virginia City, Montana with his two brothers. In 1873, Hooker came to No Man’s Land where he spent the next thirty years in the saddle. He was foreman for the OX Ranch many years. When the OX withdrew to Montana after the disastrous blizzards of 1886, Hooker was given their side camp on the Frisco, later the Tom Stratton Ranch. That year Hooker married Hannah Davis of Greeley, Kansas. When Hannah’s folks came to that region, Hooker yielded his ranch, the XX Frisco, they called it, to her parents, and he and Hannah went to open up a new place farther up the Frisco. They called the new ranch the Hooker Ranch. He hauled lumber for his new home from Dodge and also built outbuilding of sod and stone....

Old cowboys who have seen Hooker in action described him as one of the really great ropers of the day, a man who could ride quietly into a heard, drop a tight, small, and fast loop from either side of his mount and catch calves standing beside or under their mothers. This type of roping, more so than the sensational run and catch kind, accomplished the day’s work on the range with speed and without ostentation. It was the sort of roping most highly regarded by the cowmen themselves..... He died December 5, 1939 at Redondo Beach, California.

Heritage of the American West Performance Series  Spearfish, South Dakota  ~ Celebrating Cowboy Poetry Week

From Francie Ganje:

Spearfish, SD – The celebration of Cowboy Poetry Week, April 18 – 24 is to not only mark the history of a time-honored form of storytelling, but to also recognize today’s voices of the working West.

The Heritage of the American West Performance Series puts that at the top of its list all year long, bringing the music, poetry and song of the Great American Cowboy to audiences from across the region with its monthly live stage shows.

During Cowboy Poetry Week, its performance set for Thursday, April 22 and titled “Cowboy Culture” brings original sounds of the West to the stage with South Dakota’s Original Singing Cowboys and award winning cowboy poet Slim McNaught.

Held at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, Spearfish, the show includes a pre-event exhibit and reception that begins at 6 p.m.  The Center’s newest collection will be featured. Titled “Women of the West,” it represents a large collection of original oil paintings by Carol Cox. Also in the line up of historical displays will be the Russ Madison Collection.  Madison, a nominee to the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, is regarded as the individual who brought organized rodeo to the Black Hills region.

Show time is at 7 p.m. with South Dakota’s Original Singing Cowboys, the Heritage Cowboys, a trio of professional musicians dedicated to the presentation and preservation of the music of the Old West. Led since 1977 by Old West Trails Foundation award winner Jim Lovell, the Cowboys have performed on A Prairie Home Companion and other National Public Radio shows. Their music portrays the strength, quiet faith, humor and tragedy faced each day as ancestors pioneered west across America.

Academy of Westerns Artists award-winning poet, Slim McNaught, New Underwood, writes and performs poetry that reflects a lifetime of cowboying. His performances have been enjoyed  on RFD-TV and at the Western Music Association Festival. His latest CD, titled Reminiscin' (he has published five books and two CDs) was selected as the top Cowboy Poetry Album by the AWA in 2009.

Tickets are $7 for seniors/kids and $12 for adults.  Call the Center to order at 605-642-9378.

An encore performance of Heritage of the American West and “Cowboy Culture” can be heard, Wednesday, April 28th at 6PM (mt) on KBFS 1450AM, Belle Fourche, SD and KYDT103.1FM, Sundance, WY and on Saturday, May 1st at 1:06PM (mt) on KBHB 810AM, Sturgis, SD.

From Jerry Schleicher:

The Cowboys are coming to Green Forest, Arkansas

An exciting line-up of nationally-known cowboy entertainers, a cowboy poet talent contest, a western-themed trade show, and cowboy church are all on the schedule May 8-9, 2010, for the first-ever Green Forest Cowboy Poet Gathering and Trade Show in Green Forest, Arkansas.

Sponsored by the Green Forest Cattlemen's Steakhouse and Sale Barn, Green Forest Cowboy Church, and Circle S Ministries, the event will be held in the Cattlemen's Steakhouse and Livestock Arena in Green Forest, located 60 miles east of Fayetteville and Rogers, Arkansas, and 44 miles southwest of Branson, Missouri. Tickets to all events will be sold at the door for just $3 per individual, or $5 for couples, with children under 12 admitted free.

Events kick off from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 8, with a Cowboy Poet Talent Contest on the stage of the Cattlemen's Steakhouse. An open mic contest open to all comers will also be held on the Cattlemen's Steakhouse stage from 3:15 to 5:00 p.m. The talent contest will be judged by cowboy entertainers, while the open mic competition will be judged by a team of local cowboys. Top finishers in each event will win a custom-inscribed belt buckle, with ribbons awarded for second and third place. After lunch, the winners of a youth cowboy poetry contest will also be recognized with ribbons and certificates.

Headline entertainer shows will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Green Forest Livestock Arena. Featured performers include Glenn Ohrlin, one of America's best-loved cowboy musicians and storytellers. Named a National Heritage Fellow by the National Endowment for the Arts, Ohrlin is a nationally-renowned collector and performer of traditional cowboy songs, range ballads, stories and poems that developed in the Old West from 1875 to 1925. A resident of Mountain View, Arkansas, Ohrlin is regularly invited to perform at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada.

Steven Spalding, a nationally-known cowboy and country gospel recording artist, will also headline the event. A circuit-riding cowboy preacher who preached and performed before more than 70 different audiences last year, Spalding's music career has taken him from the Wheeling, West Virginia, Jubilee to the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. In 1978, he was nominated for three Country Music Association awards for Entertainer of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, and Song of the Year. A western artist, poet and horse breeder from Lebanon, Missouri, Spalding has now produced seven CD's of country gospel and cowboy music.

Performers will also include Francine Roark Robison, Oklahoma's Cowboy Poet Laureate from Tecumseh, Oklahoma; Paul Harris, a cowboy musician from New Mexico; Phil Rexwinkle, a working cowboy and poet from Welch, Oklahoma; Abe Reddekopp, a cowboy singer from Kansas City; and Jerry Schleicher, a country humorist and cowboy poet from Parkville, Missouri. The show will also feature a top finisher from the Texas Crossroads Cowboy Poetry Gathering competition, scheduled for Feb. 5-6 in Van Horn, Texas. At 8:30 p.m., following the final headline show, Loree Blackburn's Steakhouse Band will perform with Steven Spalding and guests on the Cattlemen's Steakhouse stage.

The event will coincide with an annual wagon train reenactment, with wagons camped near the Green Forest Sale Barn on Friday and Saturday nights. A cowboy trade show offering western-themed horse and cowboy gear, tack, leather goods, western apparel, and western and American Indian jewelry, will also be set up in the parking lot of the Sale Barn, and will be open to the public from noon Friday through noon Sunday, May 9. The event will conclude with Cowboy Church in the Green Forest Livestock Arena on Sunday morning from 11:00 to 12:00 a.m.  Pastor Billy Williams will deliver the message, with music performed by Pastor Steven Spalding and Loree Blackburn.

For more information, contact Steven Spalding at 417-532-6470 or circlescowboypreacher@netzero.net; Pastor Billy Williams at billy@gfcowboychurch.com; or Jerry Schleicher at 816-741-2773 or gschleicher1@kc.rr.com.

Heritage of the American West Performance Series  Spearfish, South Dakota

From Francie Ganje:

The Road Less Traveled….
Troubadour Tour Covering Six States Debuts On Heritage Stage

The Main Street of North America is in the Heartland; home to hearty souls, colorful characters and more than one salty tale. And between Canada and the Republic of Mexico is a single ribbon of highway where a traveler will find it.

U.S. Highway 281 begins at the International Peace Gardens in North Dakota, then covers the ground that the Lewis & Clark Expedition traveled over in South Dakota. It takes those on the road less traveled to the world’s largest shamrock in Nebraska and on to the Home on the Range in Kansas where the song originated, to the Indian Capital of the Nation in Oklahoma and finally to the famous wildflowers and cultural border towns of Texas.

Now imagine that journey in song.

“Seeing it through your windshield is like watching an ever-changing canvas,” says western and folk singer/songwriter Kerry Grombacher of his Hwy 281 Troubadour Tour, “the open range and farm ground of North and South Dakota, Nebraska’s Sand Hills and Kansas’ Gypsum Hills, the prairie of Oklahoma and the Hill Country of Texas.” Traveling the mostly two-lane highway through rural America, Grombacher sees his role as one of a modern-day troubadour. “In taking stories in song from town to town, it’s a reminder to us all that there are others who have stories to share from places much like our own—wherever we might call home.”

The Heritage of the American West Performance Series will host the debut performance of the US Highway 281 Troubadour Tour, as Grombacher sets his sites on The Buffalo City (Jamestown, ND) to begin an 1,800 mile odyssey of exploring rural America...in music.

Set for Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the High Plains Western Heritage Center, Spearfish, the 90 minute live stage performance begins at 7 p.m., and also features a pre-show exhibit and reception beginning at 6:00 p.m.

A book signing with educator, historian and author Donovin Sprague will introduce his newest book in the Images of America Series, titled Ziebach County: 1920 – 2010. Sprague, a recent nominee to the prestigious USA Artist Fellowship, has also traced and recorded the histories of four Plains Indians Tribes as well as the history of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. In addition to the Ziebach County centennial edition, he was a contributor to the Timber Lake: 1910-2010 Images of America centennial edition.

The Heritage of the American West Hwy 281 Troubadour Tour debut performance and Images of America book signing will open its doors at 6 p.m. at the Heritage Center. Tickets are $7 for seniors/kids and $12 for adults. For more information, call 605-642-9378.

The live debut performance of the Highway 218 Troubadour Tour will be broadcast on Thursday, May 27th on KBFS 1450 AM (Belle Fourche, SD) and KYDT 103.1 FM (Sundance, WY) at 6 p.m. and on Saturday, May 29th on KBHB 810AM at 1:05 p.m. (both Mountain time).

May 29-30, 2010 POSTPONED
Wild Rags & Wranglers and
Desert Cowboys Express  Southern Colorado

From Bethany Braley, National Day of the Cowboy

The Desert Cowboys Express is about to hit the steel rails of Southern Colorado. The National Day of the Cowboy 501(c)3 and the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad have engineered a special event to honor the Desert Cowboys; a unique group of men and women who served in the deserts of the Middle East. These brave citizens left ranches, homesteads, and farms, to promote freedom in foreign lands. In the superior execution of their duties, the Desert Cowboys demonstrated that Cowboys are as adaptable and resourceful as ever. “Ride with Pride,” as we recognize this special group of soldiers and DOD civilians at a festival of cowboy culture where they’ll be presented with a National Day of the Cowboy 2010 Cowboy Keeper Award featuring “Simple Things,” the artwork of artist, Jim Clements.

The ceremony will take place on top of Colorado’s spectacular La Veta Pass. Guests will arrive via two historic trains on Sunday May 30, 2010 (Memorial Weekend). Your ticket includes a scenic round-trip excursion with the soldiers, music by Fred Hargrove, Belinda Gail and Jon Chandler, poetry by rancher Floyd Beard and Poet Lariat Diane Tribitt, WWPAS performers Buck Montgomery and Hotshot Johnny, Reenactors from Fort Garland, vendors, and a hot meal featuring locally raised beef. Other special guests include Jeff Connors (son of Chuck Connors), Jamie Nudie (granddaughter of Rodeo Tailor Nudie), and Julie Ream, granddaughter of Cactus Mack and a 2007 Cowboy Keeper Award winner. One highlight will be the performance of “Toe Roaster,” a magical, heartwarming, campfire play, written by (and starring) hit songwriter, Bryan Kennedy, a co-writer on some of Garths’ hits, like “Good Ride Cowboy” and “American Honky Tonk Bar Association.” Bryan’s saddle pals, songwriters Troy Jones (People are Crazy), and Wynn Varble (Waitin’ on a Woman), are the other two colorful Toe Roaster characters.

The NDOC has worked since 2005 to ensure cowboy things were sent to the Desert Cowboys while they were in Iraq and Afghanistan. Subscribers to the National Day of the Cowboy News will remember reading Starline Brass sponsored NDOC flags for them, while Western Horseman Magazine sent books and magazines, and Western Jubilee Recording sent cowboy music. Fast Back Ropes heard the Cowboys were practicing with one rope, so they sent 30 ropes their way. Wade Kimes sent western music, and Leanin’ Tree shipped cowboy stationary. Publisher Dakota Livesay sent Chronicle of the Old West issues, and, when the Cowboys’ laptop bit the dust, Mike Watson from Mountain Pass Builders sent them not one, but two laptops.

Asked why the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad offered to host the Desert Cowboys Express, Ed Ellis, one of the owners, explained, “We’re grateful for the sacrifices of all men and women in uniform, but the Desert Cowboys have often gone beyond the call of duty, going back to the Middle East over and over. From the comfort of our homes, the Middle East seems far away and a little unreal, but it has been very real to the Desert Cowboys, and we're proud to honor them here in Colorado.”

Call 877-726-RAIL to purchase Desert Cowboys Express tickets or go to the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad website www.riograndescenicrailroad.com. A limited number are available due to the capacity of the trains, so get your tickets early to ensure you’re part of this wonderful NDOC benefit and event. Tickets for the Saturday, May 29, Wild Rags & Wranglers gala kick-off dinner and auction, led by auctioneer extraordinaire, Dakota Livesay and the famed Cowgirl Historical Foundation, may be purchased by calling Larra Atwater 719-892-0212 or at the NDOC site, www.nationaldayofthecowboy.org. Sponsorship and vendor opportunities are also available by contacting Larra Atwater.

Join us as we honor the Desert Cowboys and Ride with Pride!

20th Annual Chuck Wagon Gathering and Children's Cowboy Festival  Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum

From the museum's media release:

CHUCK WAGON GATHERING & CHILDREN’S COWBOY FESTIVAL
AT THE NATIONAL COWBOY & WESTERN HERITAGE MUSEUM

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK— One of the nation’s greatest family friendly festivals is back at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The Museum is celebrating the 20th Anniversary Chuck Wagon Gathering & Children’s Cowboy Festival presented by Dogwood Foundation, May 29 and 30, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Children can participate in numerous outdoor activities including pony rides, rope making, bandana designing, horseshoe pitchin’, crafts and more. Stagecoach and covered wagon rides around the festival grounds are a family favorite. Photo opportunities are abundant and pictures taken with Oreo, a Texas Longhorn steer, are popular. There will be children’s storytelling that will share Charley & Amanda Meet Rusty the Rodeo Clown.

The food is fantastic! Ten chuck wagon crews cook such delicious fare as stew, brisket, sourdough biscuits, beans, cobblers and rice pudding for visitors to sample. Recipes are prepared hourly at a demonstration wagon by sisters Sue Cunningham and Jean Cates, award-winning cooks from the C Bar C Ranch, Hartley, Texas. The Cunningham wagon is still used during spring and fall roundups. Demonstration recipes are free to the audience and cookbooks are available for purchase at The Museum Store wagon.

Western musical entertainment is scheduled on two separate stages. Don Edwards will be on stage Saturday, May 29. Edwards’ career as a balladeer, guitarist and composer has spanned more than three decades, enriching audiences with his authentic Western music and his extensive knowledge of cowboy lore. He played the role of Smokey, Robert Redford’s best friend, in the motion picture “Horse Whisperer.” Edwards was awarded the 2010 Chester A. Reynolds Memorial Award in honor of the Museum’s founder.

Red Steagall, who will perform Sunday, May 30, has performed at the Chuck Wagon event since 1991. The official Cowboy Poet of Texas is a master songwriter, recording artist, author, actor, radio personality and rancher. His career spans more than 25 years of performances at rodeos, major fairs, poetry gatherings and worldwide tours. Steagall was inducted into the Museum’s prestigious Hall of Great Westerners during the 2003 Western Heritage Awards ceremonies. He has received eight Wrangler Awards throughout the years for outstanding Western albums. Brother Danny will accompany Steagall on guitar.

Rich O’Brien, well-known throughout the Western music world, will perform on Sunday with Steagall. O’Brien has been involved as a guitarist and producer on more than 150 recordings. He has received 13 Wrangler Awards, more than any other person in the history of the Museum’s Western Heritage Awards.

Chuck Milner, cowboy singer, poet and songwriter will entertain as well as introduce other performers on the platform stage at the south end of the festival grounds. Milner, who has performed at many Western events across the country, has entertained at the Museum’s gathering since its inception 20 years ago.

Joining Chuck Wagon entertainment again this year is the A—Bar Bunkhouse Band, a Western swing band. These four talented young men range in age from 16 to 22 and have been individually recognized with several awards from music writing to instrumental and vocal music competitions. They enjoy Western swing music and the opportunity to carry on the tradition of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys.

Other festival entertainers include talented Oklahoma Flyin’ Fiddler Wayne Cantwell, who plays Celtic, old time and bluegrass; cowboy singer Jim Garling; and working cowboy Gary Pratt accompanied by bass player Doyle Ellis and Susanne Woolley, violin and harmonies. Pratt has performed for the RFD-TV series “Best of America by Horseback,” and has appeared in “The Black Marshall” and “Trail End” with actor Barry Corbin for which he wrote the title song.

Dr. H.P. Hedgethicket III, Esquire will hawk his many “remedies and cures” during a hilarious Old West Medicine Show. Lisa Sorrell, Guthrie, Oklahoma, will demonstrate boot making. Also returning is Oklahoma City Blazers hockey coach Doug Sauter’s Express Clyde and Pony Show +1 featuring the Clydesdale Blazer, donkey Redhawk and miniature horse Taxi.

When it’s time to cool off, families can take kids up the hill to the Museum’s indoor Children’s Cowboy Corral which offers plenty of hands-on entertainment. “Please touch” is the mantra often heard in the children’s building where activities include mounting real saddles, dressing up in cowboy gear and pretending to cook at a real chuck wagon camp. From howling coyotes atop a 20-foot rock mountain to oversized puzzles of Museum paintings and interactive computer games, the Three C’s Ranch is a fun place to be.

One of the best bargains of the day is the chance to visit the Museum’s fascinating galleries that tell the story of the West. Not only do children love the activities at the festival and the Children’s Cowboy Corral, they love to step back in time and walk down the streets of the Museum’s turn of the century old Western town, Prosperity Junction. A popular gallery with the adults, the Western Performers Gallery, evokes fond memories of movie stars from the silent era to the present. One of the most charming components of the gallery is a 1930s replica theater where a short film, narrated by Sam Elliott, captures the eventful history of Hollywood Westerns.

Chuck Wagon activities, along with a tasting bowl and Museum admission, are included in the price of festival admission: adults $18, students with student I.D. $15, seniors 62 and above $15, children 4-12 $6. Children three and under are admitted free, as are members of the Museum. Two-day passes are available for adults $27; seniors and students $22.50; children 4-12 $9.00. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Museum remains open until 5:00 p.m. No discounts or coupons will be redeemable during the festival.

The festival with its mouth-watering food, activities for children, musical entertainment for the entire family and opportunity to browse the nation’s premier Western heritage museum attracted the attention of the Food Network which featured the festival on its “Top Five: Summer Sensations” program.

Dogwood Foundation presents the 2010 Chuck Wagon Gathering in cooperation with major Sponsor Shawnee Milling Co., in conjunction with Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau, Great Plains Coca-Cola Bottling Company, Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Department, The Oklahoman, Stillwater Milling Company along with Wagon Sponsors Chisholm Trail Corral of Westerner’s International, Arnold/El Reno Monument Company, Ramey Steel Construction, Nuzum Wagon Works, Vox Printing, Osborn Electric Co., Jennings Enterprises, Oklahoma State Builders Association and Merritt Properties with support from Museum Partners Devon Energy Corporation, Chesapeake Energy Corporation and the E.L. and Thelma Gaylord Foundation.

The National Cowboy Museum, America's Premier Western Heritage Museum™, is supported through memberships and private and corporate donations. The Museum offers annual memberships that include year-round admission for six people, including the Chuck Wagon Gathering, subscription to the award-winning, quarterly publication Persimmon Hill and discounts for events and at The Museum Store. Nationally accredited, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum is located in Oklahoma City’s Adventure District at the junction of I-44 and I-35. 14th Annual Echoes of the Trail Cowboy Gathering   Fort Scott, Kansas

From Judy Howser:

14th Annual Echoes of the Trail Cowboy Gathering at FSCC is Almost Here!

The cowboys will ride into Fort Scott, Kan. June 11th to sing and play guitar, tell cowboy tales, cook western “grub” at an authentic chuck wagon, and sell all sorts of western gear and decorative items.

In the Fort Scott Community College Round Room on Friday, June 11th, Johnny Kendrick and his sons, the “Branchy Boys” will perform at 7 p.m. after the opening by Steve Spalding, Wanda Cothren, Jerry Schleicher, and Geff Dawson. If you come early, you can buy some excellent Mexican food from Jeannie and Buck Rowland of Arma, Kansas. Their “Chili Diablo, Taste of the West” will be in the snack bar Friday night and all day Saturday.

Then, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 12th, a dozen cowboy poets and musicians will entertain non-stop on two stages while vendors sell art, tack, jewelry, CDs, and much more in the halls of the FSCC Academic Building. Ronald Stranghoner of Iola, Kan. will demonstrate how a saddle is made, and there will be saddles for sale as well. Outdoors, Becky Koger of El Dorado Springs, Mo. will have a trailer full of western clothing to buy! Collette LeFebvre Davis will be back with her new partnership, “Redbrickroad Catering,” and she will have some scrumptious breads and sweets to buy. Also new this year will be Lisa Johnson selling goat’s milk soap on Saturday in the FSCC halls. David “Rowdy” Yates of Mound City, Kan. has again made a one-of-a-kind, gorgeous buckle for the Silent Auction, and he and wife Barbara will again sell collectibles. Back again will be Country Cupboard with their array of great western home décor, books, and more; and Joe and Kathy Lester with their leather goods, western clothing, home décor, and much more. Lynn Chaney will again display her hand-made needlework, done in western/southwestern themes. Ken Lorton will be demonstrating deer-hide braiding and selling his wonderful hand-made tack, bracelets, neck ties, and more. Steve Spalding not only will be selling his art and many CDs and DVDs, but also has sewn some novelty items in addition to purses! All performer CDs, DVDs, and even tapes will be on sale also.

At noon, Dennis and Donna Williams will again cook up an authentic, tasty chuck wagon meal, available to all for just a free will offering! Then, at 1 p.m. Published writer and cowboy poet Jerry Schleicher and nationally-known cowboy and country gospel recording artist Steve Spalding will lead a cowboy poetry/song writing workshop in Room A122.

At 3 p.m. June 12th, the 5th graders who won our cowboy poetry contest will read their winning entries. This year, organizers have added a second category, so that six students will win cash prizes. One category is cowboy poetry that is based on the student’s concept of the cowboy way of life in the old West. The new category will be for poems based on actual historical figures and events during the “cowboy days.” Teachers and principals in three counties in Kansas and two counties in Missouri were invited to participate. Students at Eugene Ware and Winfield Scott in Fort Scott, as well as Pleasanton, KS, and Sheldon, Mo. submitted entries. Poetry Chairman Gary Wimmer says the committee judged well over a hundred original poems.

All poems had to be at least 14 lines, rhyming, and telling a true story of a character in western history, or a story about life on the trail in the Old West. Winners of the Traditional category are 1st Place: Piper Bolen of Pam Ham’s 6th grade class in Pleasanton; 2nd Place, Grant Goldston of Stacia Weilert’s 5th grade class at Winfield Scott in Fort Scott; and 3rd Place, Gabrielle Allen of Winfield Scott. In the Historical category, winners were 1st Place, Makayla Robertson of Linda Jackson’s 5th grade class at Eugene Ware in Fort Scott; 2nd Place, Angelina Fosanella of Mrs. Ham’s 6th grade in Pleasanton, Kan.; and 3rd Place, Jennifer Ewing of the Pleasanton 6th grade. First Place awards are $50. Second Place winners receive $30; and Third Place students will receive $20.

All winning students, their parents, and their teachers have received complementary tickets to the 14th Annual Echoes of the Trail Cowboy Gathering and an invitation for the students to read or recite their poems to an audience at 3 p.m. in the Fort Scott Community College Round Room June 12th.

The Echoes of the Trail Steering Committee wishes to thank the teachers who encouraged their students to learn about the history of the American cowboy and taught them to write cowboy poetry. Echoes of the Trail is dedicated to the memory of the men and women who trained horses, roped, herded, guarded and branded cattle, and otherwise lived the legendary life on the trail in Kansas and what was the “Wild West.”

Following the presentation, the microphone will be open to all until 4 p.m.

At 7 p.m. June 12th,
Johnny Kendrick, Arnold Schofield, and Cliff Sexton will introduce the show, followed by Abe Reddekopp, D. J. Fry, Harold Carpenter, and Joe Lester, who will open for our featured performer, Del Shields of Humboldt, Kan. After the break to wind up the Silent Auction, Shields will entertain from 8:20 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Shields participates in the “Best of America by Horseback” RFD TV show, which is still airing the film of Del and others riding horseback and entertaining from Mexico to Canada in May 2009. Del performed at Echoes in 2004 during the Cowboy Poetry Contest sponsored by the Heartland Chapter of the Academy of Western Artists, and won third prize. Since then, he has had much success. He has released two CDs, “Son of the Prairie Wind,” and “A Little Bit Western.” and appeared on satellite radio in addition to RFD TV. He is in the process of publishing a book of his original cowboy poetry, called “New Trails and Old Cowboy Tales.”

This year, Cowboy Church will be held at 9 a.m. so that attendees won’t have to wait so long for the chuck wagon breakfast that follows.

Tickets are on sale at Country Cupboard on Main St. in Fort Scott, and will be available at the door. Admission is $15 for the entire weekend, or 2/$20 for Senior Citizens. Children 12 and under are admitted free. There is a free will offering for chuck wagon meals. Cross Ties Cowboy Cowboy Poet Gathering and Trade Show  near Lexington, Missouri

From Jerry Schleicher:

The Cowboys are coming to Lexington, Missouri!

An exciting line-up of nationally-known cowboy entertainers, a cowboy poet talent contest, a western-themed trade show and cowboy church are all on the schedule July 9-11, 2010, for the first-ever Cross Ties Cowboy Poet Gathering and Trade Show.

Sponsored by the Cross Ties Cowboy Church of Odessa, Missouri, the Longhorn Cowboy Church, Circle S Ministries, and the Heartland Cowboy Performers Association, the gathering will be held in the Event Center at the Big River Ranch, a 2,100-acre horse ranch and camp located just outside of Lexington, Missouri. An offering of $5 per adult per day will be accepted at the gate, with children under 12 admitted free.

The gathering kicks off from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, with a Cowboy Poet Talent Contest in the Big River Ranch Event Center. An open mic cowboy poetry contest open to all comers will also be held at 3:30 that afternoon. The talent contest will be judged by a team of cowboy entertainers, while the open mic competition will be judged by a team of local cowboys. Top finishers in each event will win a custom-inscribed belt buckle, with ribbons awarded for second and third place. After lunch, the winners of a youth cowboy poetry contest will also be recognized.

Headline entertainer shows will be held from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m., and again from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Featured performers include Steven Spalding, a nationally-known cowboy and country gospel recording artist and circuit-riding cowboy preacher from Lebanon, Missouri, who performed before more than 70 different audiences last year. A member of the Western Music Association, the Country Gospel Music Association, the Missouri Cowboy Poets Association, and founder of the Heartland Cowboy Performers Association, Spalding's music career has taken him from the stage of the Grand Ole Opry to three Country Music Association Award nominations. This popular entertainer has now produced seven CDs of country gospel and cowboy music.

The show will also feature Johnny Kendrick, a cowboy singer, songwriter and musician who specializes in old, authentic cowboy music and poetry as it was sung or told on the trail. A rancher from Richards, Missouri, Kendrick is a co-founder of the Echoes of the Trail Cowboy Gathering in Fort Scott, Kansas, now celebrating its 13th anniversary. Kendrick also produced the popular Echoes of the Trail music CD.

Other featured performers include Evelyn Roper, a western singer, songwriter and cowboy poet from the western slope of Colorado; Eddy Harrison, a cowboy and country gospel performer and recording artist from Las Cruces, New Mexico; Francine Roark Robison, Oklahoma's Cowboy Poet Laureate from Tecumseh, Oklahoma; Abe Reddekopp, a cowboy musician from Kansas City; and Jerry Schleicher, a cowboy poet and country humorist from Parkville, Missouri.

The event will also include a Civil War reenactment, mounted shooting demonstrations, and a three-day trade show offering western and cowboy-themed goods. The gathering will conclude with Cowboy Church in the Big River Event Center on Sunday morning from 11:00 to 12:00, with the message and music performed by Reverend Steven Spalding.

Big River Ranch is located at 20111 Goodloe Orchard Rd., about two miles east of Lexington, Missouri, off SR-224. August

August 12-15, 2010
Michael Martin Murphey's Westfest
Rifle, Colorado

From Michael Martin Murphey:

Michael Martin Murphey's WESTFEST® 2010 is officially set to be held in Rifle, Colorado, August 12-15, 2010. This western celebration will be located at the Garfield County Fairgrounds in Rifle, Colorado. The Garfield County fair dates are August 4-7, 2010.

WESTFEST® will be held at the Garfield County Fairgrounds. Michael Martin Murphey, a well-known songwriter and entertainer founded WESTFEST® in 1986 as a way to preserve memories and images of the Old West. Michael took a few years off to get back to the music business and now is bringing back WESTFEST®.

"It's an educational and entertainment event," explained Ty Morgan, program director of Moose Country Radio in Grand Junction, who is one of the Sponsors of WESTFEST®.

Murphey, whose 1975 song, "Wildfire" is perhaps his best known, hosted WESTFEST® for a decade at the Copper Mountain Ski Area to celebrate Western arts and culture. WESTFEST® attracted between 20,000 and
30,000 people a day at the height of its popularity.

WESTFEST® was put in mothballs about five years ago, when Murphey decided to get back to writing and performing music, but is being revived this year.

"We want to start it small and grow it," said Morgan. "We're anticipating an average of 4,000 to 6,000 per day."

He said the offerings in the WESTFEST® lineup will include western artists and sculptors, equestrian events (including lessons at riding a professional cutting horse). In addition, he said, wagon rides and trail rides are now being arranged.

WESTFEST® is a large-scale complex of different  "villages," such as a "Cowboy Village," a "Native American Village," an Outdoor Village, and a "Mountain Man Village," each complete with characters true to the culture and era of the Old West and vendors offering goods for sale.

                  HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE!

______________________________________________________________________________

Max Walker was one who wore many hats during his twenty years of involvement with the Hells Canyon Mule Days event. He, along with Bob Casey, Jerry Winegar, Jerry Perren, and a handful of other locals, were the Founding Fathers and Mothers of this annual event.

Max was the driving force behind the scenes as well as main stage each year during the event. He was the first chairman of Hells Canyon Mule Days and acted in that capacity for many years. He also provided initial financing for the event. Besides being a contestant in the events, he and his wife Marcel and their mules were the official escort for many Hells Canyon Mule Days Grand Marshals over the years. The Walkers were honored as Grand Marshals of Mule Days in1992.

Max was a avid sportsman and loved to hunt, fish, hike and camp, but telling his famous hunting stories was his favorite pastime. The Snake River area and the Wallowa Mountains were among his favorite places. An expert at shoeing horses and mules, many livestock owners sought out his excellent services.

The Max Walker Memorial Fund was established in 2005 by Hells Canyon Mule Days, Inc. in the memory and honor of the late Max Walker. The Scholarship Grants are funded through the Hells Canyon Mule Days event, the Max Walker family, and donations from individuals who want to remember Max Walker and contribute to a Wallowa County student’s education.

The judging team will be led by 13-year National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo veteran, the one and only “Prairie Pastor,” Ed Nesselhuf and include Darrell Arnold, poet, author, photographer, and long-time editor and publisher of Cowboy magazine; the notoriously funny and talented cowgirl poet, Sam DeLeeuw; one of Western America’s most admired cowgirl poets and author, artist, and teacher Jo Lynne Kirkwood; and the man who started the Western Legends Roundup, one of Americas premier Western festivals, Dennis Judd.

This year the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo takes on an international flavor with cowboy poets from 12 states, Canada and Australia competing for approximately $6000.00 in prize money, silver buckles, trophies and a year's worth of bragging rights. Poets compete, on stage, in a stock rodeo format. With numbers on their backs, judges, and a rodeo announcer, the poets spur their "rides," (their poems) as they compete in 9 different events, giving each contestant a golden opportunity to see how they really stack up against their peers. There will be a Friday night show featuring cowboy poets and musical acts.

Saturday, September 18, the top 50 percent of the competing cowboy poets advance to the final round. Following the finals, a Cowboy Poetry Shoot-out will be held, as top ranked cowboy poets compete for the title, "Best in the West." Poets interested in registering for the NCPR may contact Sam Jackson,  last2camp@kanab.net  (435) 644-5459 or (435) 899-1100.

A headliner and awards show will take place on Saturday evening featuring the winners of the National Cowboy Poetry Rodeo along with popular western singer and songwriter, Brenn Hill.

While in Montrose, poets and families will enjoy the Western Colorado Experience, which includes Black Canyon; Ute Indian Museum; Western History Museum; Ouray—“the Switzerland of America”; and other attractions. Many will take home memories and local products from historic downtown Montrose.

The San Juan Healthcare Foundation is the major sponsor and the fundraiser proceeds will go to the Caring Friends Fund for patients at the San Juan Cancer Center.

From Sam Jackson, May 18, 2010:

Howdy Bard Pards (and other interested folks),

Four months from tonight we’ll be sitting in the Turn of the Century Saloon in beautiful down town Montrose Colorado, as our favorite emcee,  Mr. Smoke Wade, introduces poets and musicians who will be entertaining at the Saturday night Headliner Show and I will be handing out trophies and checks for over $6,000 to the Rodeo winners.

The Turn of the Century Saloon is located in beautiful downtown Montrose Colorado just West of highway 50, only a couple of blocks from the main business district.  It is an absolutely magnificent Western facility that will add an authentic “Old West” atmosphere to our event.

Don’t have a “hard” schedule as yet, but in general, beginning around 1 PM Thursday at the Saloon, riders can pick up their welcome packets and join in a workshop, after which, we will draw for “Ride Times” followed by an evening, NCPR hosted, “Get acquainted” party, catered by Pine Cone catering.

The Rodeo’s first go-round will start Friday morning at 8 AM sharp, running until around 5, followed by a Friday night show featuring NCPR talent.

Saturday morning, same start schedule for the second go-round followed by the “Shoot-out,” the day ending end with the Saturday night Headliner show, once again showcasing the rodeo winners along with some musical talents.

Sunday morning at am, Cowboy church, (location TBD)

The San Juan Western Heritage Festival will have their booths and other entertainment events located on the property along side the Saloon facilities. We should end up with an event enjoyable for the entire family and community.

Best regards from yer ol’ (and getting’ ol’er) corral boss,

Sammy Jackson

PS: Take a look at these web sites and the Black Canyon Motel is giving us discount rates again this year.

Ninth Annual Spirit of the West  Sioux Falls, South Dakota

From Cass Swenson:

Spirit of the West Festival

September 17-19, 2010

Cowboy Entertainment, Arena events, Horses, Period and Modern vendors, Chuck Wagons, Dutch oven cooking, re enactments, cowboy church, cavalry and military drills, music, poetry, hands on history...and more!

www.spiritofthewestfestival.com

Exciting events for the 9th Annual Sioux Falls Spirit of the West Festival:

BREAKING NEWS:

The Gentlemen of Old Deadwood, LLC” are coming back! This group loved the Spirit of the West Festival SO much last year, they requested to perform again! This is a professional re-enactment group, and will be performing their legendary and historically accurate “Trial of Jack McCall” both Saturday and Sunday at the Festival and stage historically accurate street gun fights both days as well. They are ‘backed’ by their own band “The Dover Brothers”, which includes a mandolin and guitar player, washboard & spoons and wash tub/stand up bass players! These performers have been in numerous TV and movie roles, and have been on HBO, History Channel, PBS and numerous cable and local TV programs.

The exciting part about this is that this play has only been performed outside of Deadwood once, and that was here at the Spirit of the West last year! If you have not had the opportunity to go out west and enjoy this great show, come see the encore performance as the Festival brings the Streets of Old Deadwood to the Fields of North Sioux Falls!

Both the play and the gunfights are high on audience involvement, and true to the nature of the Spirit of the West Festival, especially involved the children. The audience will be the jury and witnesses in the Trial which includes humor and constant improv while restating the true facts of historical events. The street shootouts also include a “swearing in” of all present “little Deadwood deputies” by Old Marshal May with a quick gun safely demonstration by Lame Johnny. Strict in safety, the Gunslinger performances always use ‘blanks’ or ‘cereal loads’ in their performance guns. See www.spiritofthewestfestival.com for schedule of the activities out at the show.

(NOTE: Photos of the “Gentlemen of Old Deadwood, LLC are available at www.deadwood.org. Click on “Photo Gallery” and then “Attractions.” Choose “Gunfighters” for shoot out pics or “The Trial of Jack McCall” for actors and the band.

NEW MUSICAL PERFORMERS:

Greg Hager, a Nashville, TN recording artist from Valley City, North Dakota will be bringing his songs about life, love and living to the Festival this year. He performed at the South Dakota State Fair and the Casey Tibbs Museum Grand Opening in 2009 and looks forward to bringing his unique and original cowboy music back to South Dakota. See his website http://www.greghager.com for more information.

The
Yoders of Sumner, TX will be sharing their cowboy campfire music on the Festival stages this year as well. Laurinda plays mandolin and sings country and gospel is accompanied by her fiddle playing husband, Eran. You are certain to enjoy these wonderful new entertainers.

MOVIE STARS:

Stars of the cowboy era big screen will again walk the "streets" of the Spirit of the West Festival September 17-19, 2010
Robert Fuller, Ty Hardin, William Smith, Ed Faulkner, James Stacey and Peter Brown will be signing autographs and selling memoirs of their movie days at the Festival. Revel in the days of when the good guys wore white hats and good always triumphed over evil as you visit with these old cowboy heroes of the big screen.

RETURNING:

Sherwin and Pam Linton and the Cotton Kings will again grace the Main Stage of the Festival, reviving those great old western classics. Known as “Mid America’s Country Music Legend” and a “Nationally Unknown Superstar”, Linton and the Cotton Kings have been thrilling the music world since 1957—and are most proud to have NEVER missed a concert date in all those years! Linton has rubbed elbows with some of country music's greatest, and has been instrumental in launching more than one youngster’s careers in music. He will be sharing his own tunes, as well as those of Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Marty Robbins and more at Spirit of the Westsee www.spiritofthewestfestival.com for his playing times.

Local Artist
Amanda Swenson will also be returning, along with Ron and Jane Cote, Luverne, MN cowboy musicians. Donnie Miller and the Dover Brothers will also be featured on stage for your listening pleasure.

The Re-enactment area will feature World Champion whip cracker,
Adam Winrich and gun spinner Garrett Popek with their amazing demonstrations and comedy routines. The Silver Creek Mavericks and Old West Society will join the Gentlemen of Old Deadwood with stories and plays from the Old West itself. Rope Spinner Mike Wooldridge from Florida will return with his sidekick, Cow Patty, and their one of kind humorous sideshows!

Spirit of the West would not be complete without
Brian and Paula Bausch of New Mexico and their fabulous trick horses…join them as they perform and entertain all three days of the Festival.

The Bausch’s will also compete in the Arena Shooting Events and Wild West Shows complete with the Tribute to the American Cowboy and our Veterans. The 7th Cavalry and other horse exhibitions will be scheduled throughout the weekend.

MORE NEWS: West River Author and Cowboy,
Mel Anderson, will again be present at the Festival. Mel and with his wife Dorothy, will be promoting and signing his books, including his latest: Wild Places – Wide Apart. This is Mel’s fourth book preserving the stories, history and lives of the men and women from our South Dakota past…folks who came looking for a new life after the Civil Way, settling the ‘wild’ and staking a claim to ‘free land’. Mel’s matter-of-fact, humorous style of writing keeps readers engaged page after page.

Unique to this book, Mel chose James Patrick of Watertown, SD to illustrate the stories he remembered from his youth. James holds a bachelors degree in Fine Arts, and could have made his mark on the world with his own paintings and writing, but instead found his calling as a renowned wainwright, researching and building from scratch or restoring historically accurate wagons. He often completes custom work for Hansen Wheel and Wagon out of Letcher, SD. He takes his personal Peter Schuttler Chuck Wagon to competitions and cooking events across the country. He and his wagon will be set up in close proximity to Mel Anderson at the Spirit of the West Festival September 17-19, both available for story telling and book signing all three days of the Festival. Come out any of the three days of the show and sit a spell and visit with Mel and James, have your books signed and sample some of James’ award winning chuck wagon vittles.

The Festival will be hosting its 6th Annual Cook Offs with Chuck Wagons from across the Midwest competing for $3,000 on Saturday, followed by Sunday’s Public Dutch Oven Cook Off. Come and watch—or come and cook and take home your share of the fabulous prizes from our great sponsors. New this year is the American Chuck Wagon Society will be hosting a chuck wagon clinic at 2pm on Friday at the Festival if you have ever had the desire to learn more about chuck wagons and dutch oven cooking. There is a charge for the clinic, but it includes ACWA membership and an evening meal. Paid Clinic participants may enter the festival grounds for free after 1:00pm. The clinic will be ran by a few of the founders of the ACWA coming all the way up from Texas for this event.

These are all great additions to an already exciting Western Festival. Hosting its 9th Annual Event, Spirit of the West continues to get bigger and better, winning honors and awards across the country, most recently being chosen again as America’s Best Heritage Festival by American Cowboy Magazine, among several other honors. Often cited as a "vacation destination," Spirit offers something for all ages with its unique vendors, fast arena action, cowboy vittles from Dutch ovens and chuck wagons, plays and music. Join us for the day or the weekend…you’re sure to find your cowboy spirit, if only for the day. SPIRIT OF THE WEST FESTIVAL…FUN FOR THE LITTLE BUCKAROO ‘N YOU! www.spiritofthewestfestival.com or call 605-334-9202 for more information.

22nd Annual Durango Cowboy Gathering  Durango, Colorado

From Linda Mannix:

22nd ANNUAL DURANGO COWBOY POETRY GATHERING FEATURES RED STEAGALL September 30th in Durango, Colorado

One of America's favorite cowboy poets, musician and storytellers is Red Steagall from Ft. Worth, Texas. He will be the featured performer at the 22nd annual Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Durango, Colorado. (visit www.durangocowboypoetrygathering.org for complete schedule).

Steagall will play with his back-up band "The Boys in the Bunkhouse" at a special performance on Thursday September 30th. Known for not only his music, Steagall is a master storyteller and avid preservationist of the cowboy culture. He has been featured on NBC's Music Country USA and hosts his own weekly radio show, The Cowboy Corner.

The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering always features top cowboy poets, musicians and artists. It is held in the Historic Strater Hotel in downtown Durango where Louis L'Amour used to stay. The Gathering will be September 30th through October 3rd 2010. Besides Steagall, shows will include Dave Stamey, Chris Isaacs, Belinda Gail, Bill Barwick, Juni Fisher and about 45 other cowboy entertainers.

Highlights of the weekend include a special Cowboy Poet Train on the DSNGRR and a Cowboy Poet Trailride with Rapp Corral. Poets will entertain in every car of the DSNGRR as the train makes a special run to Cascade Canyon. On the Trailride, poets and guests ride horseback with a stop along the trail to listen to the poets stories. Barbecue lunch is included in both the Train Ride and Trail Ride.

The Cowboy Parade on Saturday morning is a town favorite. Known as a "motorless" parade, every entry must be horsedrawn, mounted, or on foot. No motorized vehicles are allowed. It goes down Main street of Durango and the town returns to the heritage of yesteryear as horses are tied up outside the Diamond Belle Saloon, just as it must've looked in 1881.

Western art is represented in many local galleries with featured openings at Sorrel Sky Gallery, Toh-Atin Gallery, Open Shutter Gallery, Goodnight Trail Gallery and new this year, the RainDance Gallery. The weekend wraps up on Sunday morning with an inspirational show of poetry and music called "A Cowboy and His Creator." Many events are free and all shows are family oriented.

The Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering is considered a highlight among events in the fall season of Colorado. Be sure to make reservations early as the town will be full of folks wearing cowboy boots and hats. For a complete schedule go to www.durangocowboypoetrygathering.org or call 970-749-2995.

Educators interested in bringing students to the program are urged to call 770-387-3849 soon.

Later that evening, visitors can meet featured artist John Coleman, and listen to Doc Stovall and the Tumbleweed Cowboy Band perform in the Museum atrium from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.  Coleman will present a lecture on his artistic style and career highlights in the Booth Theatre beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Considered one of the leading sculptors of today, Coleman creates three dimensional art that captures the historical nature and mythology of western subjects, and has recently completed a series of works called the Bodmer-Catlin Explorer Artists Series. Using detailed portraits by Karl Bodmer and George Catlin of the Native American people encountered during the Lewis & Clark expedition, Coleman sculpturally captured who these people really were. The Booth Museum owns all ten pieces in this series, permanently on display in the museum’s two-story sculpture court. Following the lecture, Coleman will sign copies of the official Festival and Symposium poster in the Museum Store. Thursday evening events are free for Booth Museum members and included with regular admission for not-yet members.

On Friday, October 22, the symposium portion of the event takes place with lectures on a variety of historical and artistic topics from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in the Booth Theatre. Admission to the lectures is free for Booth Museum members and included with regular admission for not-yet-members. Also on the 22nd, the Booth Art Academy will host a sculpture workshop for artists by featured artist John Coleman. For registration information and costs, please call 770-607-3686.

Friday evening, guests are invited to attend the Western Concert in the Booth Ballroom at 7:00 pm, featuring Belinda Gail and Jim Jones. Known as “America’s Western Sweetheart,” Gail has been honored by the Western Music Association and the Academy of Western Artists as female Performer of the Year and as Entertainer of the Year several times over the course of her career.

Jim Jones is a gifted songwriter, instrumentalist and producer. He has been named the Western Music Association’s Male Vocalist of the Year and is in much demand at festivals and gatherings throughout the West. Tickets are $15 for not-yet members, $12 for Booth Museum members and $10 for students.

Two Saturday concerts at the Grand Theatre feature the internationally famous Riders in the Sky, who will be celebrating 6,000 career performances during the Festival & Symposium. Made up of Ranger Doug, Woody Paul, Too Slim and Joey, Riders in the Sky has been entertaining audiences since 1977.  In 1982, they became the first exclusively Western music artist to join the Grand Ole Opry. The group has also provided music for several Walt Disney/Pixar albums, most notably “Woody’s Roundup Featuring Riders in the Sky” which was released as a companion album to “Toy Story 2.” Tickets for the 2:00 p.m. matinee are $25 for not-yet members, $20 for Booth Museum members and $5 for children 16 and younger.  Tickets for the 7:00 p.m. evening performance are $25 for not-yet members and $20 for Booth Museum members. Members of Riders in the Sky will be available to sign CDs and meet fans in the Encore Room adjacent to the Theatre following each show.

During the day Saturday, October 23, an array of events for the entire family will be offered in the Cowboy Festival and Western Marketplace on the museum grounds.  Entertainment includes re-enactments of the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, Western music and poetry throughout the day on two stages, fast draw competitions, humorous Western skits, demonstrations of traditional Indian dances, chuck wagon cooking, children’s activities and a living history encampment with demonstrations of pioneer skills from bygone days. Food vendors at the event will offer homemade root beer, barbecue, hot dogs and other favorite festival food items. After the service, visit the Cowboy Festival and Western Marketplace between Noon and 5:00 p.m. on the grounds of the Museum, with the same activities as listed for Saturday taking place.

Between them, these two authors have won just about every literary award the West has to offer. Johnson writes mysteries of the modern West, featuring a county sheriff from rural Wyoming (soon to be a television series) while Richards writes traditional novels of the Old West. Award-winning historians Will Bagley and Candy Moulton share encyclopedic knowledge about the westward march of America, from the earliest forays of fur trappers to the pioneers on the Oregon Trail to the organized mass migration of Mormons to the Gold Rush to the arrival of the transcontinental railroad. Noon—Greasy Sack Entertainment from Wyoming

Bing along your brown-bag lunch as award-winning singer Steve Moulton takes the stage with poet and story teller
Andy Nelson. You’ll hear songs and poems about Wyoming and the West as this ranch manager and farrier offer authentic cowboy entertainment.

1:00 p.m. —A Matinee on the Western Trail

“In Pursuit of a Dream” is an award-winning reality show that follows a group of high school students, mostly from cities in the East, as they make their way west in a wagon train. Writer and producer Candy Moulton will introduce the program, provide behind-the-scenes commentary, and answer questions.

2:30 p.m.—Keynote Presentation: Creating Western Characters that Come to Life in Fiction, with Craig Johnson and Dusty Richards

4:00 p.m. —The Past, Present, and Future of the Literature of the American West

Members of Western Writers of America answer questions and offer predictions about the changing face of Western literature. Whether poetry, song, fiction, nonfiction, or film, writing about the West is undergoing unprecedented change owing to changing tastes and technology. From the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum:

National Cowboy Museum Celebrates 16 Years of Western Yuletide Fun

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — ‘Tis the season for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum® in Oklahoma City to stage its 16th edition of Michael Martin Murphey’s Cowboy Christmas Ball. The yuletide dance will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 17, 2010 with Murphey headlining an evening of entertainment for the entire family in the Museum’s Sam Noble Special Events Center. With its buffet dinner, visit from Santa Claus, dancing and Murphey’s live performances, the event harkens back to frontier traditions when neighbors gathered to dance, eat and celebrate.

“It’s a warm, old fashioned affair,” Murphey says. “It’s common to see grandmas dancing with grandsons, moms with sons, daughters and dads, even great-grandparents! Little kids go absolutely crazy about the event, and many get into clogging and step-dancing during the fiddle tunes.”

For the past several years, the event has been a sell-out, attracting guests from across Oklahoma and surrounding states.

Reservations can be made online via the Museum’s web site at www.nationalcowboymuseum.org. Museum members will receive invitations via mail in November.

Presenting sponsor is Express Ranches and Express Employment Professionals. Supporting Sponsor is Standley Systems, with additional sponsorship by Museum Partners Devon Energy Corporation, Chesapeake Energy Corporation and E. L and Thelma Gaylord Foundation, and support provided by The Oklahoman.
